The phrase originates from Anatole France’s novel The Gods Will Have Blood (1912), which follows a young painter whose idealism gradually turns into fanaticism during the French Revolution. While reading, I became aware of how my own memories and experiences shaped my understanding of the narrative. Memory emerged as the central mechanism through which interpretation took form. Drawing on this process, the work reinterprets the novel’s atmosphere and irony through personal imagery and experience. The project was exhibited at Hyle [matter] and SPACE 52 in 2019.
